Preparing for 4th of July

A family having a cook out on the lawn

Summer is finally here and now the 4th of July is rapidly approaching. If you’re hosting outdoor activities for the 4th of July celebration, such as a cookout or maybe a game of cornhole, then you’re going to want to get that yard in shape. Below will be some great reasons for getting your lawn in shape and some tips for activities you might have planned.

Why Mow for the 4th

  • If friends and family are visiting, the lawn is the first thing they will see, so you might as well make it look good for your first impression
  • If you have kids that like to play outdoors, they’ll definitely appreciate playing in a freshly mowed lawn, especially if you happen to have Bahia grass with the long seedheads.
  • Cleaning up spent fireworks, those bottle rockets in particular, is much easier to do when the lawn has a fresh cut on it as they can’t hide in the tall grass.
  •  Even if you aren’t hosting activities for the 4th, your neighbors might be and they’ll be grateful that you pitched in to make the neighborhood look nice for Independence Day.

Tips for Outdoor Activities

  • First and foremost, make sure that yard is mowed and edged and looking sharp.
  • Try to avoid doing fireworks on the lawn as they can burn the grass.
  • If it hasn’t rained recently, watering the lawn before the fireworks begin is a great way to prevent unnecessary fires.
  • The day after all the fireworks, comb the yard and make sure all the bottle rockets are picked up so they don’t accidently get hit by a lawnmower and make a mess of shredded paper everywhere
  • If you have a turf variety that is susceptible to damage from foot traffic, such as St. Augustine, try to avoid any activity on the lawn that involves repeated traffic in the same areas.
